Today I saw a sweet 9 month old shelter puppy named Dottie who was recently adopted by one of our new clients. She had a very high fever (above 104!) and was having difficulty breathing. I knew she was sick when she turned down a treat. The x-rays showed fluid accumulating in her lungs and possible evidence of pneumonia. We immediately started IV fluids and antibiotics. At the end of the day, the x-rays are worse – more fluid is filling her lungs. A brief ultrasound showed evidence of a possible hernia in her diaphragm, the membrane that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. She was probably born with this condition. We (the doctors and owner) are trying to decide if we can do the surgery she needs or if Dottie will be sent to a speciality hospital.
Keep your fingers crossed for Dottie!
